Waipara is a small rural Canturbury town.
Waipara Valley is only 40 minutes drive north (60km) of Christchurch International Airport and Christchurch City, so why not stay out of the city and enjoy the surrounding areas?
It forms a part of the icon Alpine Pacific Triangle, in conjunction with Kaikoura and Hanmer Springs. If you're a wine buff, you'll just love the Waipara region.
It's a great drive found on SH1 or SH7 depending which way you're coming from. Make sure you're here in time for the Farmers' Market (in front of the Hurunui Council Chambers, Carters Road, Amberley), which is held every Saturday from 9am until midday, November to the end of April. It offers a wonderful array of local produce.
While here enjoy the Weka Pass Railway, which is one of New Zealand's heritage railways. It runs over 12 km of the former Waiau Branch railway between Waipara and Waikari.
Or enjoy fossil hunting or visit the Maori rock drawings on the Waikari Walks.
So come and enjoy the relaxed rural atmosphere of Waipara (not to mention its fine wines). And don't forget to keep your eyes peeled for Frog Rock on your journey.
