Hurunui offers you the great outdoors. It is an east coast, South Island farming region, a 45 minute drive north of Christchurch. The region has idyllic small rural towns, stunning beaches, accessible forests, numerous parks and beautiful rivers. The well signposted Alpine Triangle Touring Route links the Hurunui towns and villages via a 370km easy and incredibly scenic route.

The route offers outstanding landscapes running from the coast to the craggy mountains and exhibits splendid coastlines, rich rolling farmlands, wide fertile plains, limestone outcrops and exotic and native forests. Hurunui District offers a great choice of superb activities to refresh the soul and get the blood pumping and also the chance to indulge, unwind and relax body and mind.

There are many fantastic places to visit in Huruniu, a few such are:

  • Hanmer Springs village with its thermal pools, spa, walk/bike tracks, adrenaline-filled adventures, amazing scenery, buzzing café culture and boutique shops is a tourist mecca.
  • Many of the regions numerous wineries and a boutique brewery offer wine-tasting and cellar door sales. Some offer lunches and dinner in their cafés and boutique restaurants.
  • Balmoral Reserve in Hurunui offers camping by the Hurunui River and is perfectly located for a spot beach-casting.
  • The Weka Pass Railway, uses both steam and diesel-electric trains to travel through the unique limestone beauty out past Waipara and is usually open the first and third Sundays of each month.
  • Waiau River offers relaxed fishing with plenty of brown trout and seasonal salmon for the lucky angler. It is an awesome place for river swimming and traditional family water fun.
  • Motunau Beach is the place for sea fishing, wildlife watching, diving and enjoying the tranquil seaside atmosphere.
  • The Gore Bay Tourist Drive passes the surfing and swimming beach of Gore Bay, up past Cathedral Cliffs and through Port Robinson.
  • Leithfield's Kowai Walkway is a lovely, well maintained track.
  • St Anne's Lagoon in Cheviot is an extensive reserve boasting century old oak trees and a tranquil and photogenic lagoon.
  • Lake Sumner Forest Park, with its remote high country lakes, beech clad mountains, wide rivers and hot springs, is popular for tramping, hunting, trout fishing and mountain biking.
  • The Hurunui river is widely used for white water kayaking.
  • Mt Lyford Alpine Resort Ski Area is fabulous for winter sports.
  • The private Hurunui High Country Track covers 30km over three nights. Meandering over the working high country Island Hills Station the track takes you through many differing types of foliage and sceneries such as farmland, lush beech forest and sub-alpine terrain.
  • There are many picturesque, high quality golf courses.
  • Mountain biking is prevalent in the Hurunui District and there is work being undertaken to continue development of the Hurunui bike trails.
  • Horse treks in the high country can offer an awe-inspiring once in a lifetime experience.
