Darfield can be found sunning itself in the South Island's high country just 45 minutes west of Christchurch on the way to the West Coast, enjoying inspiring alpine views and the sound of the area's two great rivers.

Darfield has a good choice of accommodation, a couple of shops (including a snow and outdoor gear shop) and great cafés. The "not to be missed" Selwyn Community Gallery showcases New Zealand art that really reflects the beauty of our country and its unique culture.

Darfield is a popular launching area for hot air ballooning. The views of the Canterbury Plains and the lofty Southern Alps are breath-taking.

The village is near five skifields; offering plenty of skiing and snowboarding choices for all ages and abilities. The fishing is exceptional in the clear, clean waters of the Waimakariri and the Raikai Rivers. The rivers are well stocked with salmon, brown trout and rainbow trout.

There are some stunning walkways in the Darfield area, one of which is Washpen Falls, just west of Darfield. This is a private walkway in the awe-inspiring natural setting of a sheep and deer farm. It is a lovely well-constructed track with boardwalks and stairs to help with the hill climb. There are multiple waterfalls and the walk ends by a tranquil lake. There is a $10 maintenance fee.

Golf is well catered for in the area with four very different courses. One of which is the international standard Terrace Downs Golf Resort.

For a real experience of high country life, why not experience a self drive 4WD off-road tour with High Country Journeys? The journey is a week long experience exploring a network of station tracks from Canterbury to Otago amongst the supreme scenery of towering mountains and crystal clear lakes.

A visit to Middle Rock High Country garden or other local garden will boost your knowledge of high altitude plants. Exploring these beautiful gardens with their panoramic views are a wonderful way to spend a day.

The Middle Rock Farm Tour introduces visitors to seasonal farming activities and a stay at a genuine high country homestead. Watch the farmers and dogs mustering the sheep, enjoy spring lamb feeding and soak up the farming culture before stopping for a bit of homemade morning or afternoon tea.

One way to explore all that Middle Rock station has to offer is to take advantage of the High Country Tour with the property's owners.
