Christchurch Airport

Christchurch Airport tower Antartic Centre, Christchurch Airport, Canterbury

Christchurch International airport, known as the gateway to the South Island, is situated at the northern edge of the city.

It is New Zealand's second largest airport and is seeing a growth in both domestic and international services. The airport is just a short bus ride away from the city centre and close to a wide choice of accommodation. If you are sticking around the vicinity of the airport before continuing to explore the South Island there are a variety of attractions close by.

The Christchurch Airport Wine Tour is a wonderful way to familiarise yourself with internationally acclaimed New Zealand wines.

The International Antarctic Centre provides interactive fun for visitors of all ages. The hands on information displays showcase Antarctica as it is today, was historically, the wildlife, the flora and fauna, human impact on the continent and Antarctica's impact on the world. The indoor Antarctic storm experience, warm jackets and overshoes provided, enable visitors to experience first hand the noise and temperature of the region's raging winds. At the conclusion of your visit to the centre you may choose to watch the stunning 17 min long film, 'Beyond the Frozen Sunset'.

Hold on tight for the exhilarating Hogland ride. The all terrain amphibious Antarctic vehicle safely travels across a variety of rough terrains, simulating travel across the icepack.

The Penguin encounter enables visitors to view rescued and disabled Little Blue Penguins in their wonderful indoor/outdoor complex.

If animals and wildlife interest you, you're in luck as the airport is very close to two amazing wildlife parks: Willowbank Wildlife Reserve and Orana Wildlife Park. Willowbank is all about preserving and promoting wildlife conservation and exhibits New Zealand wildlife, introduced species and their impact on the country and rare breeds in a beautiful, unrestricted, natural environment. The nocturnal kiwi house gives visitors a chance to view kiwi quietly foraging away in a darkened enclosure.

Willowbank also puts on an amazing Maori Cultural Experience full of fun and information. The guided show offers visitors a look at Maori lifestyle, traditions, performance and ends with a mouth-watering 4 course dinner, including Hangi. Orana Wildlife Park ranges over 180 hectares and is an open range zoo, where the animals are in enclosures resembling, as much as possible, their own natural environment. Orana Park is dedicated to conservation of endangered species and is involved in captive breeding programmes. Visitors either walk through the park or hop on and off the Safari Shuttle. The daily animal feeds are a big draw for audiences to watch the keepers interact with and talk about the animals. There is a chance to get up close and personal with the lions.

If you need to stretch your legs there are many lovely little parks close by or the Styx Mill Conservation Reserve and walkway. Here you will find a winery, picnic spots, children's playgrounds, dog walking areas, boating lakes and extensive walking tracks.
